Yay! You’re going to Disney World! I’m so excited for you and your family. But now you are thinking about how you will budget for this Disney World vacation, right?

When you start looking at taking a Disney World vacation, you can be super excited until you start pricing that magical vacation. First you start looking at room prices, and you decide if you want to stay on Disney property or off. Then you move on to tickets and decide how many days and if you want Park Hoppers. Now you may already be up in the thousands and you’ve not even looked at food and any extras you’ll need to put back money for.

Not to worry my friend, I’m here to share some great ways to save some money and keep your trip within your budget!

Keep Checking for Special Offers for Your Disney Resort Room

There is pretty much ALWAYS a room discount at Walt Disney World. This can be a room only, package (room+tickets), free dining, etc. If you are familiar with Disney, and all the planning and booking that goes with it, you know to keep checking for room deals. However, if you aren’t familiar, don’t have time, or are completely clueless, a travel agent that specializes in Disney can help to make sure you have the best discount applied to your room for you. This takes it off your plate and you can rest easy knowing someone else it taking care of it for you.

Bring Food with You

This one is big if you have several people in your travel party. I have my three kids and usually one or two additional adults when we go to Disney. We will bring snacks and breakfast foods from home or have grocery delivery when we get here. This allows you to have a quick grab-n-go breakfast before you head to the parks in the morning.

I also bring snacks into the parks, which is allowed by the way. You just can’t bring glass bottles or loose ice into the parks. If you need to bring a cooler with ice–put ice from the ice machine into ziplock bags that are removable for security. Packing snacks prevents us from getting too much junk food between meal times and saves a lot of money when you are providing snacks for multiple people.

Choose Meal Times Carefully

A great way to stretch your Disney World budget is to be strategic when planning your dining. Now obviously you can’t just eat at certain times of the day but hear me out. If you want to book a character meal–consider booking a breakfast. You can often save at least $10 per person on a Breakfast Character meal than lunch or dinner meals. Bonus tip: if you book a late breakfast buffet, you can also try lunch offerings as they change out the buffet during your meal.

Other tip that I often use is to book my table service meal between regular meal times. So I’ll book breakfast at 10:30 and if it’s a table service it will probably last until 11:30-12:00. Then we won’t eat again until dinner. Or book late lunch/early dinner around 3:00. You will finish in 60-90 minutes and you’ll probably only need a snack later in evening.

Having one table service and one quick service meal per day works really well. You aren’t eating so much in the Florida heat and it’s giving you time for some air conditioning and rest. Plus you still have room for some great Disney snacks!

Look for Special Ticket Offers

Now there are some various options and opinions when it comes to tickets. I’m going to share all I know about ticket discounts with you.

Purchasing Tickets Directly with Disney

When you look at Disney World ticket prices, you will know that they will take up a large part of your budget. This can be a couple of different options. First you can book a room and ticket package. This is really convenient because it links with your resort confirmation in My Disney Experience and if you cancel–you get a full refund (unless you are within 30 days of checkin).

Another option is to just buy your park tickets straight from Disney on their website or through a travel agent. These will come with a confirmation number to enter into My Disney Experience and you match the tickets to the people, easy peasy.

A third option is special tickets Disney is offering. They often have a special ticket for Florida residents. Right now, at the time of this writing (spring 2025) they have a 3 day Magic ticket that is much less than a regular multi-day ticket, but it does come with stipulations.

This will need a bit of looking into, but you can get a special price if you purchase directly through Disney, if it fits your situation. I always recommend using a rewards credit card or discounted Disney gift cards to purchase anything with Disney so that you can save money or get something back.

Discounted Disney Ticket Sellers

Purchasing through an authorized Disney ticket seller can be a great way to save money on your Disney vacation because tickets are probably the largest single cost for your trip. I have used Undercover Tourist, Sam’s Club, and Unlocked Magic. I’ve never had any trouble with any of those ticket sellers and my tickets have linked in My Disney Experience perfectly fine.

Undercover tourist is free to use and will save money off the direct prices and you can go directly to the gate. Using Sam’s Club or Costco will be useful for those who already have membership. When I used Sam’s Club, I did have to go to the ticket booth to pick up the tickets though. It’s been a while since I used them, so you may want to check before you purchase.

I currently have a subscription to Unlocked Magic. It’s $6/month or $49.99/yearly. It has a ton of information and chat rooms that will help you with all your Disney planning and questions. They also have the best discount on Disney World tickets–usually about 10-12% off the direct price. They also offer a dining reservation finder. It’s a great tool for Disney planning.

Purchase Souvenirs for Kids before your trip

It is really easy to blow your Disney World vacation budget on souvenirs in the parks. One easy way to save some dough is to pre-purchase souvenirs. This is usually easier when your kids are smaller. When they get older, you can set an amount for them and it’s up to them to decide what is worth the purchase.

But when they are little, I always check out Amazon, Walmart, Target, discount and dollar stores to find cheaper Disney toys and trinkets to give to my kids in the parks and as little surprise gifts in the room if they have been super good that day. This incentive works great because they know that if they don’t whine or complain, there will be a surprise waiting for them back in the room.

Purchase Discounted Disney Gift Cards

This alone saves us hundreds of dollars every Disney vacation. You can find discounted cards at wholesale clubs. Sam’s Club will have 10% off $100 cards a couple times per year. They usually limit that to 2 per member. I get 5% off with my Target RedCard.

There are also ways to get free Disney Gift Cards. Various apps like Shopkick (For 500 Free kicks use my code: COOL322809 when you download the app) can let you cash in your points for Disney Gift Cards.

The third way I get savings for Disney is using my Disney Visa Rewards Card . I earn when I use the card and the earnings are put onto a Rewards Redemption Card that you can use in the parks, paying for your trip, and at the Disney Store online. You also get a discount when you use your Disney Visa at certain dining and retail locations, tickets for special tours, and other special events on WDW property.

Plan Your Days Carefully

There are lots of ways your dates and days can cost you more and less at Disney World. Tickets, Genie+, and room prices fluctuate daily. Your Disney budget will go much further if you are aware of these prior to your trip.

A great way to do Disney World on a budget is to be strategic in park touring to avoid having to pay for Genie+. Use the My Disney Experience App to keep an eye on wait times and Genie+ costs during the weeks leading up to your trip. If wait times are relatively low leading up to your trip, you may not need Genie+ for many or any of your days.

Another way to avoid paying for Genie+ is to hit the parks at rope drop to get on a couple of the more popular rides that will have longer waits in the middle of the day. Once crowds start coming in, head towards some other attractions that wait times stay lower or grab something to eat. I do recommend taking a midday break at your resort, having a table service meal, or hitting the pool. Come back to the parks in the evening and stay til closing. Wait times are usually super short in Magic Kingdom during the fireworks show, if you are willing to miss the show on Main Street.

I have a post on the best times to go to Disney World if you want to check it out. If you want to go during the cheapest times, I recommend September and mid-January. There are some various weeks sprinkled through the year, but those two are pretty standard year after year.

Budgeting for Disney World

There are lots of ways to save before and during a Disney World trip. Think about what your priorities are for your trip and what is the most important things you want to be able to look back on and remember. Will this be your only Disney World trip or one of many? A shorter trip during the week is cheaper than a weeklong or weekend trip. One park per day tickets will be less expensive than park hoppers. It just depends on what is most important to you and your family.

I hope this has given you some ideas for saving on your Disney World vacation budget. It’s always fun to find new ways to save on a trip to Disney!
